Improving our Global Infrastructure
The world faces challenges that ignore national and regional boundaries and cannot be solved by any single individual, nation or science. Preparing for the outcomes of population growth and rising global temperature requires multi-disciplinary approaches and collaboration among all stakeholders.
Geodesign (design at geographic scale) provides a collaborative approach which seeks to integrate multiple disciplines and uses geographical information systems (GIS)-based analytic and design tools to help explore alternative future scenarios in response to stated problems. Where conventional discipline-based approaches have not adequately addressed the transdisciplinary problems we face, Geodesign offers a holistic and innovative approach that can identify successful solutions to these complex challenges.
The challenge we face is: How do we organize ourselves globally to address the climate and population challenges that threaten us all? In 2018-19, The International Geodesign Collaboration (IGC) was formed. Ninety global university teams participated, using geodesign to create scenario-driven designs for regional and local-scale study areas which address future global changes.
Key research questions addressed by the project
The focus of the IGC is academic, to understand better how geodesign can be applied to addressing design challenges in settings that are widely dispersed, differ widely in scale and in the extent of resources available to find geodesign solutions:
Q1. How do different participant teams choose and define their systems?
Q2. How are global and local design scenarios identified and adapted?
Q3. How are evaluation and impact assessments defined across many partners?
Q4. How and why are the global studies more similar or different?
